France has 8,000 kilometers of navigable rivers (and canals between rivers). This map shows most of the rivers, but not the canals:

On rivers and canals, you can travel slowly, far away from the crowds: stop along the way to enjoy local food in small towns. Maybe you can get off and ride a bicycle under the shade.
